DENVER (CBS4) – Unemployment is hovering at about 8 percent in Colorado and a lot of people want to get back to work by working on their own.
4 On Your Side Money Saver Suzanne McCarroll took a look at franchise opportunities and other ideas being explored this weekend.
Franchises are not cheap and the work is hard, but there are new ideas for those looking for work.
Arvino Sing bought this 7-Eleven franchise two years ago after he was laid off from his job in finance
“I decided it’s time to invest in something I have a more control of,” Sing said.
The 7-Eleven franchise is just one of many people can explore at a weekend expo at the Merchandise Mart.
“We are going to have 40, 45 different exhibitors, franchises from all over the U.S.; they are looking to expand in the Denver area,” Judy Moreland with the Franchise Business Expo said.
The franchises represented there will cost $10,000 to more than $100,000 to buy.
Tim Richards operates his own business and offers some practical advice.
“You want to find company that has a very aggressive training program,” Richards said. “A company that takes you by the hand and leads you forward.”
Another idea for work comes from Tobi Hunt, who is hosting at the Entrepreneur’s Expo in Broomfield this weekend. It’s for those interested in direct sales.
“Companies like Mary Kay and Arbone and Send Out Cards and Pampered Chef,” Hunt said.
Working for oneself isn’t for everyone, but this weekend you can find out if it might be for you.
