(CBS4)- The family of one of the victims who died after contracting West Nile Virus wants more spraying to keep the mosquito population under control. Dorothy Iris Meaker, 86, is one of the victims who died in Colorado. This year is expected to be one of the worst in history for the West Nile Virus. There are 2,118 cases nationwide with 33 in Colorado. Two people have died in the state and 33 have died in the U.S. this year. Meaker’s family is upset about how she died. They want to see changes implemented to cut down on the mosquito population. West Nile Virus is spread by the insect. Meaker’s family wants more spraying to kill mosquitoes so the risk is reduced in Colorado. “I think it’s a Band-Aid and yet we’re not stopping the bleeding. For example, I have a can of OFF! so I can spray myself, all that doesn’t do you a bit of good,” said Meaker’s son Randy Meaker. Meaker had previously fought cancer and survived.
