Russel Crowe, who played Rear-Admiral Jack Aubrey in Master & Commander: the Far Side of the World, got lost on the far side of Long Island while on a canoe trip on Sunday and had to wait for a Coast Guard boat to pick them up.

Crowe is in Long Island filming another movie about a boat, Darren Aronofsky's arc-epic Noah. Let's hope that his success captaining that ship turns out a little better. Via the Associated Press, that's Crowe in the middle of two of the Coast Guard officers who rescued him. Nice beard, good sir. Crowe was out kayaking with a friend when darkness forced them ashore:

As it got dark, the two got lost and eventually headed for shore, beaching their kayaks in Huntington Bay, nearly 10 miles east from where they had set out.

The U.S. Coast Guard was patrolling the area, and heard Crowe call out to them from the shore around 10 p.m., Swieciki said.

Earlier in the day, Crowe tweeted "So what's going on on Long Island tonight? How is Labor day being celebrated?" Then there's the more ominous "4km walk," tweet that came three hours before his official statement on his embarrassing rescue:

not lost,we knew where exactly where we were, paddling around from csh into wind, we ran out of day. Grand adventure eh @chris_feather ?

Grand adventure, indeed.
