AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) – It’s been almost six weeks since the theater shootings in Aurora and Monday one of the last victims to leave the hospital talked about her ordeal publicly for the first time.
Farrah Soudani is out of the hospital but has a long recovery. Prior to the shooting she was working as a hostess and waitress at a local Red Robin restaurant, but life changed inside Theater 9. Now a feud within her family about donations for her recovery is complicating matters.
Soudani, 22, says she’s taking life day by day. She was hit by flying shrapnel during the shooting. She lost a kidney, spleen and had reconstructive surgery to her leg.
Soudani doesn’t have health insurance and her medical bills are mounting. CBS4 previously reported that fundraising efforts to help her turned into a fight between two sides of her family.
Soudani’s brother says donations collected on his side have now been refunded because of that feud. He says he had commitment up to $1 million.
The GoFundMe.com site is still intact. A family friend set it up and $170,000 has been raised.
Soudani says despite the fund feud, what keeps her spirits high are people who have been reaching out to her.
“Just everyone who sent me a letter, who just prayed for me; that means the world to me,” she said. “I couldn’t begin to tell you how thankful I am,” she said.
Soudani’s parents say she still has more surgeries to go. Her father also believes the attorney general’s office should investigate where some of the donated money has gone and says the returned funds should not have been returned without Soudani’s consent.
