Those interested in becoming official chain installers on California state highways in the Sierra Nevada are being sought by the California Department of Transportation. These are the folks that are more than happy – for a fee — to wrap your city-slicker tires in snow chains so you'll be allowed to venture further into the winter storms. Permits are available for Highways 4, 88, 89, 108 and 207 in Calaveras, Alpine, Amador and Tuolumne counties. All new applicants are required to attend an orientation class, which will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 9:00 a.m. in the Caltrans Maintenance Office in Angels Camp.
