Gessler said in a recent interview with The Associated Press the closeness of the presidential race here is putting many on edge. But Gessler says state officials and county clerks have been preparing for more than a year and that his staff has come up with responses to dozens of scenarios of things that could go wrong. Election officials are also expecting many of the votes will already be cast by Election Day. Gessler has become one of the most closely watched election officials in the country. Glitches with his office’s website registering voters and his search for non-citizens illegally registered to vote have angered Democrats and voting rights groups.
