DENVER (CBS4)- Flowering and tender plants may need special protection when the thermometer drops below freezing.
Mulch is one of the best ways to protect the roots of your plants. Bark, straw, sawdust, peat moss, leaves and grass clippings can be used as mulch.
The mulch should be about two inches deep to protect the roots from the cold.
Covering plants during freezing weather can help protect flowering plants. Use an old sheet or lightweight blanket instead of plastic because it insulates better.
Another option is to move your plants inside, even a covered porch or garage offer more protection than outside in the elements.
After temperatures warm up, experts say to resist the temptation to prune cold-damaged plants for a few days until the full extent of damage is known. Wait a few days to see how the plant recovers.
